Consolidation of the Euro-Atlantic policy at the constitutional level will only strengthen the split in the society. This opinion was expressed by Viktor Medvedchuk, leader of the “Ukrainian choice – the right of the people” public movement. According to the results of the latest opinion polls, the number of supporters of joining NATO does not exceed 44% in Ukraine, and 36% oppose it, the public figure noted. Politician and political expert Ruslan Bortnik shares the opinion: “Such amendments, in my opinion, are a kind of humiliation of the Ukrainian Constitution. There is not a single country in the EU and NATO that would make such changes to the Constitution. Everyone understands perfectly that the Constitution is the basic fundamental document of the people of Ukraine, while political economic or military blocs are situational, client-oriented, constantly changing”. The expert emphasizes: this important amendment should be coordinated with the people of Ukraine – instead of only politicians speaking on their behalf. “Declaration of such goals in the Constitution will create both internal additional fault lines and may cause additional aggravation in the Donbass, because it will definitely become a red rag for Russia. Only the Ukrainian people at an all-Ukrainian referendum can make such a decision,” he added. The expert asserts that amending the Constitution will not bring Ukraine a step closer to the EU and NATO, because these organizations do not declare their readiness to consider Ukraine as a candidate for membership.   Source: 112.ua
