PAS candidate Maia Sandu voiced her readiness to promote the study of the native language in Moldova by citizens, but it is especially important to know Romanian. At the Friday with Anatol Golea program, the host asked Maia Sandu about her attitude as a candidate to the Russian language, recalling that during her tenure as Minister of Education, Russian was excluded from the compulsory school curriculum. According to Sandu, the main goal of this amendment was to “give people the choice of which language to learn.” “It’s good to have a choice so that people can choose for themselves. I know that many parents expressed a desire for their children to continue to learn Russian. In the law, we gave people a choice of which language to learn. I will support all native language programs, including for Romanian,” Sandu said. According to her, learning Romanian is very important if “parents want their children to stay in the country.” “We need to develop the Romanian language, if we want the children to stay here, it is important that the children know their native language and Romanian, otherwise they will leave. Romanian is needed to integrate into the community,” Sandu said. Earlier, on October 16, Moldovan President Igor Dodon said during a video broadcast that the Russian language should again become a compulsory subject in the republic’s schools.
