Oppositionist and main Belarus President’s rival in the recent elections, Svetlana Tikhanovskaya announced the beginning of a general strike on October 26. According to tut. by, October 26 began with workers’ protests at the largest Belarusian enterprises. “Today the regime has again shown the Belarusians that violence is the only thing it is capable of. But detonating stun grenades among people and under maternity hospitals’ windows is not power. The regime is not ready to speak the truth, be responsible for its words and fulfill people’s demands. This means that this regime does not worth Belarusian people. This means that this regime is losing power. Therefore, tomorrow, October 26, a nationwide strike will begin. Belarusians will take this step because their word is law. The law, which they tried to deprive us of but which we will definitely return. So our main peaceful weapon, the solidarity, will help us within,” Tikhanovskaya said in her Telegram channel. After that there were reports of strikes at the largest enterprises from different parts of the country: Belkommunmash, Minsk Electrotechnical Plant, Grodno Azot. On the eve, thousands of protesters took to the streets of Belarusian cities, at least 100 thousand people gathered in Minsk. It was not without harsh detentions and the use of special equipment - flash-noise grenades and rubber bullets. Recall, on October 13, Svetlana Tikhanovskaya announced a “popular ultimatum” and called on the authorities to fulfill three demands: Lukashenko must announce his resignation, violence in the streets must stop completely and all political prisoners must be released.
