According to opinion polls results, the majority of Moldovans do not support the republic entering into NATO. The country's constitution provides for the neutrality status. Since 1994, the republic has been cooperating with the alliance according to the individual partnership plan. The incumbent President Igor Dodon’s term of office expires on December 23. By this time, the new president, the leader of the pro-European Action and Solidarity Party Sandu, which was recognized by the Central Election Commission as the winner of the second round of the presidential elections on 15 November, is expected to take office.
