Consultations on the extension of gas transit through Ukraine after the expiration of the current contract began in Moscow. Germany is represented by the special representative of the FRG government, Georg Waldersee. Georg Graf Waldersee, recently appointed German government special envoy for gas transit through Ukraine, held the first talks in Russia. On Wednesday, September 8, Waldersee met with Deputy Prime Minister of the Russian Federation Alexander Novak. "During the working meeting, the possibility of using the Ukrainian transit route after 2024 was discussed. The parties agreed to continue relevant consultations," the Russian government said in a statement. Germany has repeatedly stated the need to maintain gas transit through Ukraine after 2024, when the current transit agreement ends. This clause became part of the agreements reached in July between German Chancellor Angela Merkel and US President Joe Biden. In exchange for Washington's refusal of new sanctions against the Nord Stream 2 project, Berlin, among other things, pledged to secure an extension of the transit of Russian gas through Ukraine after 2024.
