A plenary session of the European Parliament today voted for a resolution granting the Republic of Moldova the EU candidate status. "The European Parliament welcomes Moldova's formal EU membership application on 3 March 2022 and calls on the EU institutions to grant Moldova candidate status under Article 49 of the Treaty on European Union, as well as to continue work on integrating the country into the EU single market and on enhanced sectoral cooperation. The EP calls on the Commission to swiftly complete its application assessment and provide Moldova with its full assistance while this is ongoing," the resolution reads, deschide.md reports. At the same time, the European Parliament calls for a clear and strong political message to be sent at the June European Council meeting about the European path chosen by Moldova. The European Parliament stresses that, as with Ukraine, a clear prospect of EU membership is a key element of hope that will sustain the morale of the Moldovan population in this period of extreme instability and financial constraints.
