In doing so, Beijing said it would “with the utmost sincerity” push for peaceful reunification with the self-governing island
China on Wednesday reiterated its willingness to use military force to bring self-governing Taiwan under its control.
The announcement came amid Beijing’s military drills escalating tensions between the sides to their highest levels in years.
The statement, issued by the Office of the State Council of China for Taiwan Affairs and its information department, was preceded by nearly a week of rocket attacks and incursions by Chinese warships and aircraft into Taiwanese waters and airspace.
The actions disrupted air and shipping traffic in a region important to global supply chains, prompting sharp condemnation from the US, Japan and other countries.
Beijing will “work with the utmost sincerity and make every effort to achieve peaceful unification,” the statement said.
“However, we will not give up the use of force and reserve the possibility of taking all necessary measures. This is necessary to protect against outside interference and any separatist activities,” the statement reads.
