The British government is set to pledge 10 million pounds in financial aid to Moldova to boost resilience to Russia’s pressure, a press release from the London-based executive said. British Foreign Secretary James Cleverly is on a visit to Moldova. The British official will hold a press conference with the head of Moldovan diplomacy today, moldova1.md reports. The United Kingdom is increasing its financial help to the Republic of Moldova and Georgia. During his visit to the two countries (16 to 17 March), James Cleverly will announce an additional £10 million to support economic and governance reforms, including in the energy sector in Moldova, and new funds to enhance security during next year’s elections in Georgia. “Few societies understand the underhand tactics of Russia more than Moldova and Georgia. The UK will not stand idly by while Moscow blatantly undermines the democracy, sovereignty and territorial integrity of these countries. We must reinforce their resilience to Russia’s hybrid threats, safeguard the democratic choices of their people and protect them from threats,” Cleverly said ahead of his visit to Moldova. Earlier, the British government had also offered £12 million in financial assistance to eradicate corruption and ensure transparency.
