According to the Bender administration, the effluent discharge occurred “as a result of an emergency situation near the pumping station”.
In this regard, the Transnistrian Centre of Hygiene and Epidemiology declared “a ban on the use of the river for bathing, mass recreation and sports until a special order.”
The Reintegration Office informed the representatives of the region that “the competent authorities of the Republic of Moldova are ready to provide the necessary assistance”.
It also proposed to “provide access to qualified specialists to carry out the necessary examinations and measures to ensure the protection of public health, compliance with existing environmental regulations and rational use of water resources.”
The Environment Ministry called on the Environmental Protection Agency laboratory to urgently take and examine samples from several sections of the river, including in the Bender neighborhood. According to its information, the damage to the Bender sewerage system has been repaired by the city authorities.
To avoid unpleasant situations, the ministry also asked the population of the neighboring area to avoid bathing in the Dniester, as well as to prevent animals from consuming water from the river downstream.
