Former President Vladimir Voronin commented on the refusal of the Central Electoral Commission (CEC) to register former Prime Minister Vasile Tarlev as a candidate for the presidential election to be held on 20 October.
In a TV broadcast on 1 September, Voronin hinted that the refusal was due to fear of the current government, newtv.md reported.
Voronin emphasized that Tarlev has “the greatest experience” among all candidates running for president, noting his seven years of experience as prime minister during difficult times for Moldova. He also expressed the opinion that “the authorities are afraid of change and prefer the country to be led by people who do not have the necessary professional qualities, including foreigners and corrupt officials.”
Earlier, on 29 August, the CEC announced that it could not register Tarlev as an independent candidate due to his leadership in a political party. However, on 30 August, the former prime minister again submitted documents for registration, this time from the Viitorul Moldovei party.
