He said this at the press conference after the EU foreign ministers meeting on Monday, eurointegration.com.ua reports.
Borrell said that the ministers discussed the situation in Moldova and the situation in Georgia. Both countries will hold important polls in the next weeks. Georgia would hold parliamentary elections, while Moldova would hold presidential elections and a referendum on EU accession.
According to Borrell, Russia is sparing no effort to undermine the electoral process in Moldova, while ‘Georgia is a beaker picture’.
‘The ruling party’s recent actions, statements and electoral promises take the country away from the European path and signal a shift towards authoritarianism. That is why the European Union accession process is de-facto halted,’ Borrell said.
He added that the parliamentary elections will be a crucial test for Georgia’s democracy and its path to the European Union.
