He said this in an interview with Euronews-Romania, commenting on the political situation in Georgia and Moldova.
‘If they prove mass voter bribery, the election results can be annulled. Proposals to recognize or not recognize the election results come from the Central Election Commission. And the final decision is made by the Constitutional Court,’ the former president of the Constitutional Court, Alexandru Tănase, told infotag.md
He said the police were talking about 130,000 bought votes in the first round.
‘And there are cases in other countries where elections were annulled even on less serious fraud allegations. If a massive fraud seriously distorted the electoral process, judges can annul the election results. There is no fraud threshold in the legislation. Only CC judges can decide how big the fraud is, how much the democratic process was breached,’ he said.
Tănase emphasized that Russian interference in Moldovan elections had always taken place, but it was not so significant.
‘Russia is influencing the elections in Moldova. It has done so through the parties it finances. Still, this tactic has not been effective enough in recent years. Therefore, the Kremlin adapted and started the strategy of buying citizens’ votes,’ Alexandru Tănase concluded, emphasizing that ‘all materials should be submitted to the Constitutional Court, which has the final decision to make’.
