Petruti on the Authorities: Lessons of the Previous Mandate Were Not Learnt

Sociologist Doru Petruti argues that the government has not learnt from the poor election results, as evidenced by the latest reshuffle and rebuke of the Anticorruption Prosecutor’s Office. In the TV programme, Petruti explains that the first days after the elections were an opportunity for the government to show that it could change the situation, but the cabinet did not take advantage of it, noi.md reports. “The election was a good chance to restore people’s confidence, especially after the tense moments surrounding the referendum and the second round,” the pollster said. However, he believes that the recent actions of the country’s leadership prove otherwise. “One of the main criticisms of the president has been her non-interference in domestic policy issues. And, during the reshuffle, the president avoids the subject because she knew what was in store for her and that this change would be construed as a failure. The question of the reshuffle was referred to Mr Recean, who in turn tried to explain the three changes,” Petruti said. He adds that a clearer strategy was in demand, developed 2-3 months before the election, that would bring the government and voters in contract through more concrete measures. Another aspect mentioned by the sociologist concerns the president’s criticism of the head of the Anticorruption Prosecutor’s Office, Veronica Dragalin, over the inefficiency of this institution, as well as hints by other representatives of the ruling party that she should resign. “Decisive steps in the field of justice were expected, but instead a very curious signal was provided about Ms Dragalin. And yet the subject was abruptly dropped. If one does not know how to proceed or bring a case to a public finale, it is better not to try at all. Besides, Mr Grosu’s slight irony on this issue is a mistake. Anything that happens behind the scenes doesn’t help. You brought in Ms Dragalin, created some myth about a prosecutor coming from abroad, and then put her in a situation where she has neither premises nor sufficient resources,” Petruti said. The government’s inability to act clearly on any issue, according to the pollster, indicates that the lessons of the last election have not been learnt. “What is to be done with Ms Dragalin now? What way out do you offer her if you want her to leave? All this indicates that the lessons of the previous mandate have not been learnt. You have changed several ministers, but there have been no real changes in the management of the government,” he concluded.
