This was stated by the chairwoman of the Heart of Moldova party, Irina Vlah.
She called the countrys neutrality a priority for the formation and intends to push for a republican consultative referendum on this issue in parallel with the parliamentary elections in 2025, infotag.md reports.
Vlah said at a briefing on Wednesday that “this is an extremely important decision of the party that concerns the whole country and every citizen individually.”
“Today we will take the first step towards the implementation of the key objective included in the programme of our party, adopted at the congress on November 16 - ensuring peace in Moldova,” Vlah said.
She noted that “the formation programme clearly stipulates that neutrality is the cornerstone at the heart of all actions aimed at maintaining peace in the country.”
Vlah recalled that “the principle of neutrality is a part of Moldova’s Constitution, but 30 years have passed since its adoption, and some people, including high-ranking officials, are starting to question the necessity of this principle and even hint that Moldova should abandon neutrality and join the military alliance.”
In her opinion, “such approaches are extremely dangerous because they undermine peace.”
“Therefore, in 2025, in parallel with the parliamentary elections, we will propose a republican consultative referendum on the principle of neutrality. People should be given the opportunity to clearly express their position on this issue, in order to put an end to speculations on whether Moldova should maintain its neutral status for many years to come. In the near future, we will start implementing a series of concrete steps to give a real shape to our initiative to hold a national referendum on the neutrality issue,” Irina Vlah said
