Russian presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov has called the non-admission of candidate Calin Georgescu to Romania’s repeat presidential election a violation of all norms of democracy. “We have not yet heard any condemnation of this from all European institutions,” Peskov said in a conversation with journalists, gazeta.ru reported. According to the Kremlin spokesman, any elections in Romania held without Georgescu’s participation will be considered illegitimate. Peskov also denied any allegations about Georgescu’s ties with Moscow. On 9 March, Romania’s Permanent Electoral Bureau rejected Georgescu’s candidacy for the upcoming presidential election. On 26 February, an arrest warrant for the politician was issued in Romania. According to the Mediafax news agency, he is suspected of organizing a fascist group aimed at undermining the constitutional order, as well as of illegally financing an election campaign. Romanian sources describe Georgescu as a supporter of Russia. He won the first round of the presidential election with 22.94% of the vote. However, Romania’s Constitutional Court annulled the election results, citing the “Russian influence”.
