Romanian politician George Simion on Wednesday became the only far-right candidate in May’s presidential election after his political ally withdrew her candidacy by agreement.
Simion, leader of the Alliance for the Union of Romanians (AUR), and Anamaria Gavrila, leader of the Party of Young People (POT), had earlier jointly filed candidates for the presidential election, eurointegration.com.ua reported.
They agreed that one of them would withdraw their candidacy if the electoral authorities approved both. On Wednesday, Gavrila withdrew her candidature.
“We have decided to support whoever has the best chance,” she explained on Wednesday.
In turn, Simion said that “today, more than ever, Romania needs the unity of its national forces.”
