Negotiations with the EU could be jeopardised by the possible strengthening of anti-European parties in Chisinau.
This was stated by the Deputy Prime Minister for European Integration. Ipn.md reports that Cristina Gherasimov warned the negotiation process with the European Union could be slowed down or even suspended if anti-European parties enter Moldova’s legislative body after this year’s parliamentary elections.
Speaking on a program on Radio Moldova, Cristina Gherasimov cited the example of Georgia, emphasizing that a similar scenario could unfold in the Republic of Moldova if Eurosceptic political forces come to power.
“If citizens decide that anti-European parties should come to power, then these parties will follow their electoral program. The chance to join the EU today is unique”, said Cristina Gherasimov.
At the same time, the Deputy Prime Minister provided details on the first European funds from the Economic Growth Plan announced by the EU.
“The first allocation of preliminary funding is expected either in April or May, and the first installment is planned for July. Thus, after the preliminary funding, the first installment should be received in July. The disbursement of these funds depends on a set of measures that we, as a country, are planning to implement. The specific projects these funds will be used for have not yet been determined”, added Cristina Gherasimov.
She also noted that if the future government decides that some investment projects initiated by the current leadership are not needed in the Republic of Moldova, the European Union will no longer provide funds for these projects.
The Economic Growth Plan provides that the European Union will allocate €1.9 billion for infrastructure projects and accelerating reforms. Of the total amount, €520 million will be provided as grants, while the rest will be in the form of concessional loans.
