In the second round of the Romanian presidential election held on May 18, independent candidate and Bucharest mayor Nicusor Dan emerged victorious. The Romanian diaspora, especially in Moldova, played a decisive role in his victory. More than 158,000 Romanian citizens living in Moldova participated in the elections, with 88% casting their votes for Nicusor Dan. In comparison, over 91,000 people voted in the first round in the Republic of Moldova, of whom 52.3% supported the independent candidate, reports libertv.md. On the night between Sunday and Monday, the elected president thanked his compatriots for their support. In a message posted on his official Facebook page, he emphasized the significance of the votes from Moldova: “Special words of gratitude and thanks to the Romanian citizens from the Republic of Moldova. Together, with trust and hope, we will continue our European path,” wrote Nicusor Dan. The May 18 election saw a record-high turnout abroad, with over 1.64 million Romanians voting overseas. Within the country, turnout reached 64.72%, with more than 11.6 million voters casting their ballots.
