Home / Security / EU Invested €197 Million in Moldova’s Defense System: Ensuring Peace and Security for Citizens
The European Union has provided Moldova with a total of €197 million in support for the modernization of its defense system through the European Peace Facility (EPF).
Investments over the past four years have developed the potential of the National Army in areas such as medicine, engineering, logistics, transport, communications and information technology, as well as surveillance of national airspace, according to Radio Moldova.
Secretary of State for Defense Ghenadie Cojocaru says that security and defense are topics that will be on the agenda of the first Moldova-European Union summit, which President Maia Sandu will host at the state residence on 4 July.
“In the face of increasingly pronounced risks and challenges, security has become a real problem, and the need to strengthen our defense system has become an urgent necessity. We cannot do this alone. By investing in defense, we ensure peace and security for our citizens. The EU is one of our strategic partners, helping us to protect peace and increase resilience to current challenges,” said Ghenadie Cojocaru.
The Moldova-European Union summit, organized by President Maia Sandu, will begin at 5 p.m. Brussels will be represented at the meeting by European Council President Antonio Costa and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.
The discussions will cover topics related to Moldova’s EU accession, the expansion of economic ties and cooperation in areas such as infrastructure, energy, digitalization and regional development. Another important item on the agenda will be the €1.9 billion Growth Plan for Moldova, recently adopted by the European Commission.
