Former Minister of Justice Olesea Stamate issued a public statement addressing key issues related to political discourse, the use of public funds, and the electoral climate in the Republic of Moldova. Her comments came in response to recent remarks by Parliamentary Speaker Igor Grosu during a meeting with the Moldovan diaspora, as reported by noi.md. According to Stamate, the ruling party’s narrative gives the impression that access to European resources depends on political allegiance. “If you don’t vote in the referendum, your village won’t see a cent of European funding. Voting against PAS in parliamentary elections is strictly off limits. All that’s left is to criminalize voting for someone else and then we’ll have a full ‘democracy’... PAS-style,” she remarked. Stamate also criticized the way authorities present the benefits of European projects. “No political party has the right to distribute public resources as though they were coming out of their own pockets or worse, to treat European taxpayer money like personal campaign funds. The PAS offer is clear: you’re either with them, or you’re off to Doina prison,” she said. The former minister emphasized that local mayors must be allowed to make decisions independently and should not succumb to pressure from the central government. “Dear primars, don’t let yourselves be manipulated. Nothing lasts forever and neither will this government,” she concluded. Recall the Speaker of the Moldovan Parliament, Igor Grosu, made controversial remarks during a meeting with the Moldovan diaspora in Switzerland. He appeared to suggest that mayors should be kept “on their toes” and “mobilized”, warning that an unfavorable election outcome might negatively impact infrastructure projects.
