Home / World / Rubio: To Achieve Peace in Ukraine, Both Sides Must Agree to Necessary Concessions
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said that in the Russian-Ukrainian war, “both sides” must agree to “necessary concessions.”
He wrote about this on social media, according to eurointegration.com.ua.
Rubio said in order to end “a complex and deadly war such as the one in Ukraine”, “an extensive exchange of serious and realistic ideas” is needed.
In particular, in his opinion, in order to achieve durable peace, Ukraine and Russia must agree to “necessary concessions.”
“And achieving a durable peace will require both sides to agree to difficult but necessary concessions,” he wrote.
That is why, he said, the US is developing and will continue to develop “a list of potential ideas for ending this war based on input from both sides of this conflict.”
On November 19, several American media outlets reported on a new 28-point “peace plan” that U.S. President Donald Trump’s team had been developing in consultation with the Russians.
Among other things, the document would require Ukraine to cede the entire Donbas region to Russia, to agree to arms restrictions, halve the size of its military, and accept Russian as a second official language.
Qatar and Turkey were also allegedly involved in the development of the document.
According to media reports, the reason for the breakdown of the meeting between Zelensky and Witkoff in Turkey on the new “peace plan” was that the Ukrainian president arrived with a different plan, which Russia “would never agree to accept.”
