Home / Politics / Igor Munteanu Resigns as Chairman of the CUB Party
The decision to change the leadership was made the day before, on 11 December, at a meeting of the Standing Bureau and the National Political Council of the party.
Victor Tarna has been appointed acting chairman. He has been tasked with ensuring unity, balance and consistency in the party’s actions until the next party congress. Igor Munteanu himself explained his departure by the desire to return to scientific work, according to rupor.md.
“I have decided to return to some academic projects that I have neglected recently. I have had an unforgettable experience over the past three years, and I am grateful to everyone who has remained my friends and colleagues, both in joy and in sorrow,” the politician wrote.
Igor Munteanu is a diplomat and political scientist who served as Moldova’s ambassador to the United States from 2010 to 2015 and was also a member of parliament. For a long time, he headed the IDIS Viitorul analytical center. He founded the CUB party in November 2022, which positions itself as a liberal pro-European formation belonging to the “family” of European liberals (ALDE).
In autumn 2024, Igor Munteanu attempted to run for president of Moldova, but the Central Election Commission refused to register him, rejecting some of his signatures. Following this, the CUB party left the political bloc “Together”, withdrawing its support for the single candidate Octavian Ticu, which led to a split within the coalition.
