According to Volodymyr Zelensky, Ukraine is not opposed to sharing electricity from the plant, but only with the United States.
Washington proposes that the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant be jointly operated by Ukraine, the United States and Russia, but Kyiv does not want to see the Kremlin as part of a joint venture to operate the nuclear power plant. This was stated by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky during a conversation with journalists, according to unian.net.
“As of today, it looks like this. The US is offering ‘33% for 33% for 33% for 33%’. And the Americans are the chief manager of this joint venture,” explained the head of state, adding that all parties, including Russia, will receive dividends from the activities of such a joint venture if the proposal is agreed upon.
According to Zelensky, Russia is convinced that Ukraine does not have serious opportunities to prevent the Russian Federation from resuming the work of the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant.
“They will tie the operation of this station to the humanitarian aspect, to the fact that there are people in the temporarily occupied territories, but people have no water, no electricity. They will say that let’s rebuild the dam, let’s turn on the electricity. And that’s why the partners say they want a joint management mechanism for this facility, because the Russians still believe that they will exploit it,” the head of state added.
He made it clear that he did not support this proposal.
“Our compromise proposal is as follows: the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant is operated by a joint venture that includes the United States and Ukraine. 50-50. But 50% of the electricity produced is provided to Ukraine, and another 50% is provided by the United States, which independently determines its distribution. We believe that this is our station, our people will work there, and the Americans and I understand how to build joint management,” Zelensky explained.
