Home / Politics / Advisor to Nicusor Dan: Romania Is Ready to Discuss Unification with Moldova
The statement came against the backdrop of remarks by Moldovan President Maia Sandu that she would vote “yes” in a possible referendum on reunification with Romania.
Eugen Tomac recalled that Romania officially agreed to discuss this issue on 27 March 2018, when the country’s parliament adopted a corresponding declaration without a single vote against, according to tvrmoldova.md.
“This is the official position of the Romanian state. It has not changed,” emphasized Nicusor Dan’s advisor on relations with the Romanian diaspora.
At the same time, the MEP noted that Bucharest cannot ignore the context in Chisinau, where elections and referendums have consistently shown a predominantly pro-European choice.
“Romania is ready to sit down at the table at any moment and seriously discuss this scenario only if Moldova considers it as an option. (...) It is their right to decide their future,” Tomac said, stressing that “the top priority for us and for the Republic of Moldova is to support the acceleration of the European integration process by all means”.
Responding to a question about Romania’s readiness for reunification, including in terms of the necessary support from EU partners, NATO allies and strategic partner the United States, Eugen Tomac stated that “all our partners know that the same people live in both Romania and the Republic of Moldova”, calling for this discussion to be conducted “in the most responsible and serious terms possible”.
