The Romanian Intelligence Service (SRI) has requested that Viktoria Furtuna, leader of the Moldova Mare party, be stripped of her Romanian citizenship. The politician has been invited to a hearing at the National Authority for Citizenship in Bucharest. The SRI request was filed on the basis of Article 25, paragraph 1, letter b of the Romanian Citizenship Law, which concerns cases posing a threat to national security, writes rupor.md. Victoria Fortuna is expected in Bucharest on 16 January, but she is subject to a ban on entering EU countries, as confirmed by the European Commission at the request of Europa Liberă România. “The persons included in the list (seven Moldovan politicians ed.) are subject to asset freezing. It is also prohibited to provide funds or facilitate access to economic resources for their benefit, either directly or indirectly. In addition, a travel ban applies to individuals, which prevents them from entering or transiting through the territories of European Union member states,” the European Commission said. In 2025, Victoria Furtuna was included in the list of Moldovan politicians subject to EU sanctions for “actions to destabilize the Republic of Moldova, in particular for bribing voters and attempting to influence the results of the 2024 presidential election and referendum”. Alongside Victoria Furtuna, eight other individuals are on the list of Romanian citizens for whom the intelligence service requested revocation of citizenship in 2025.
