Former Romanian Prime Minister Victor Ponta claims that such political scenarios have been discussed “behind the scenes” since 2023-2024. “It is commendable that a replacement is being prepared for him. There were replacements last year as well, but they were not ready in time. The two possible successors are Ms. Maia Sandu and Ms. Kovesi, who will probably take Nicusor Dan’s place in 2030. But last year they were unable to do so,” said Victor Ponta, according to independent.md. He also said that there was a specific scenario involving Maia Sandu: “This scenario, in which Maia Sandu was to be brought to power under Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan, existed as early as 2023-2024. Moreover, they have a very close personal relationship, but this plan was not implemented,” Ponta noted. The former head of government explained why these options were not implemented. In the case of Maia Sandu, he said, the political situation in the Republic of Moldova was an obstacle, and in the case of Laura Codruta Kovesi, it was her professional activities at the European level. “Ms. Kovesi and Ms. Maia Sandu had problems – one in Moldova, the other not yet ready to leave Brussels,” Ponta said. In the absence of the possibility of implementing these scenarios, according to the former prime minister, a third alternative emerged: “And a third formula appeared – Nicusor Dan,” concluded Victor Ponta.
