The President emphasized that, despite the growth in the defense budget in recent years, its level remains modest compared to the current risks and expenditures of other states. “In recent years, we have significantly increased the defense budget from 0.38% of GDP in 2021 to 0.58% of GDP in 2025. However, these funds are insufficient compared to the needs and budgets of other countries,” Sandu noted, according to bani.md. The President clarified that the goal of reaching 1% of GDP remains relevant, and until it is achieved, Moldova will compensate for the shortfall through external assistance. Over the past four years, the country has received grant support from the European Union, NATO and a number of partner states. The funds have been used to modernize the National Army, including air defense, counter-drone capabilities, cyber security and strategic communications. Due to the downing of drones on Moldovan territory, Sandu noted that Russia is violating the country’s airspace, but that solving this problem requires investment in the defense system, and that condemnatory statements alone are not enough.
