Defense Minister Anatolie Nosatii stated that the two radars will complement each other and increase the visibility of the airspace.
According to the official, the radar purchased in 2023 has limited capabilities, but these will be strengthened by the second equipment, which has already been procured with the financial support of European partners, reports ipn.md.
Anatolie Nosatii explained that, currently, the Republic of Moldova has about 20 radars, but most of them are old and cannot detect modern drones.
“We have about 20 radars. For various destinations, from different periods and in different conditions. One of them is the new one, which we procured ourselves. The old, Soviet radars, do not ensure the detection of drones, because they were designed for different types of threats and a different kind of war”, Anatolie Nosatii declared during the “Cutia Neagră” show on TV8.
According to him, the radar purchased from the state budget provides good results, but has limited capabilities due to financial constraints.
“The radar we have is quite good, but has limited capabilities, as it was purchased from the national budget and we emerged from the limitations we have”, explained the Minister of Defense.
Anatolie Nosatii says that the visibility of the airspace will be extended once the second, more efficient radar becomes operational, acquired with funds from external assistance.
“Having more money allows us to afford a larger and more powerful system, which is what we are doing now with the funds from foreign aid. Thus, these two radars will work together and complement each other, the data will come to an operational command center, which will allow us to have a better visibility of the airspace”, the minister further stated.
The radar purchased in 2023 was brought from France and cost the state budget 14 million euros. The estimated cost of the second radar is approximately 20 million euros, and its acquisition was made possible through the European Peace Facility.
