Norwegian politician Arild Hermstad announced on social media that he had nominated the President of Moldova for the Nobel Peace Prize. Hermstad noted that Sandu is at the forefront of defending democracy in Europe. “Moldova has been subjected to attempts by Russia to interfere in elections, spread disinformation, launch cyberattacks and destabilize the country with the aim of bringing to power a regime more friendly to the Kremlin. This is how Russia acts towards a number of former Soviet states. Russia is waging a hybrid war against many countries, and despite the great uncertainty around us, there is no doubt that Putin is the most serious threat to peace and stability in Europe. Maia Sandu and Moldova are fighting for all of us. Sandu responded to Russia with peaceful means: strengthening the rule of law, protecting free elections, and maintaining a democratic course. Sandu clearly distances herself from Russian imperialism and brings Moldova closer to Western democracies. This is the peacemaking of our time: building sustainable societies before conflicts escalate into violence. Countering authoritarian influence with openness and the power of the people. Democracy is a necessary condition for genuine peace. Maia Sandu played a key role in thwarting Russia’s attempts to destroy Moldovan democracy. That is why, in my opinion, she deserves the Nobel Peace Prize,” wrote Arild Hermstad.
