The European Union plans to establish a military data exchange platform without the participation of the United States by 2030. This was reported by Euractiv, according to European Pravda. The publication reviewed a presentation by the European Defense Agency, according to which EU institutions are working on a new platform called the European Defense Artificial Intelligence Data Space (DAIDS). This project aims to enable EU countries to exchange confidential defense-related information securely. Until now, EU member states have selected information providers based on national preferences, creating a chaotic mix of providers for storing and sharing sensitive data. Last year, the European Commission proposed creating a “reliable, secure and interoperable data environment” in its defense roadmap for 2030. The platform is expected to be ready by that time. The EU has already signed contracts with companies that will be involved in developing the project. The next step is to encourage countries to coordinate joint procurement of technologies that are compatible with the future European data space. The documents also state that DAIDS is planned to be introduced into the regular operations of the armies and defense agencies of member countries in 2029-2030. As Euractiv notes, the European Union is increasingly questioning its dependence on the United States, so European armies need to ensure that their data is properly protected. Currently, many countries store or exchange information using foreign infrastructure, most often American, which creates potential vulnerabilities.
