Home / World / US Senate Failed to Pass a Bill that Would Have Restricted Trump’s Actions in Iran
The US Senate rejected a resolution on military powers that aimed to prevent President Donald Trump from using further military force against Iran without congressional approval.
This was reported by CBS News, according to European Pravda.
Democratic senators, together with the sole Republican Rand Paul, secured a vote on the resolution on military powers, despite opposition from the Republican Party, which retains a majority in the upper house of Congress.
Ultimately, this was the reason for the resolution’s failure – it received 47 votes in favor and 53 against.
Since Democratic Senator John Fetterman of Pennsylvania voted against the initiative, it required the support of at least five Republicans. However, only Republican Senator Rand Paul of Kentucky voted in favor of it.
This is the second time in less than a year that Democratic Senator Tim Kaine of Virginia has initiated a vote on a resolution regarding military powers related to Iran. The upper house of Congress voted against a similar resolution in June 2025, after the United States attacked three Iranian nuclear facilities.
Kaine’s resolution, which was intended to restrict Trump’s ability to wage war without congressional approval, had little chance of success from the outset. Even if the initiative had been approved by the Senate and the House of Representatives, the US president could have vetoed it. Overriding the veto would have required a two-thirds majority in both chambers, which is held by the Republicans.
