Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baqaei has stated that Bucharest could face an “appropriate political and legal response” if it allows the US to use military bases on its territory. According to him, providing infrastructure for operations against Iran will be regarded as participation in military aggression, reports antena3.ro. “We warn all states not to become part of the aggression against Iran and the Iranian people,” Baqaei stated. He emphasized that, in Romania’s case, such a step would be considered a violation of international law and could result in the state facing international liability. According to him, it would also become a “black mark” in the history of relations between the two countries. The statement came after Romania’s decision to allow the US to use its bases for refueling military aircraft and deploying additional equipment for operations in the Middle East. This includes, in particular, refueling aircraft, surveillance systems, including drones, and satellite equipment. Earlier, the Romanian authorities stated that the country is protected by the Deveselu missile defense system and NATO defense systems. The decision to deploy equipment and allow the temporary presence of US forces was approved by parliament following a meeting of the country’s Supreme Defense Council.
