Home / Security / Diaconu: Moldova Could Become a Transit Route for Weapons Once the War in Ukraine Ends
Sergei Diaconu, head of the Crisis Management Centre, emphasized that the authorities are already in discussions with partners to identify measures to prevent this risk.
According to the official, the National Security Council, the Security and Intelligence Service, and the Border Police are all involved in the dialogue. He noted the need to strengthen capabilities at the border and provide appropriate equipment, including large scanners, which can be used to detect contraband, reports realitatea.md.
“We must ensure more effective prevention in areas controlled by state bodies, because ultimately we will act as a security buffer zone until we join the European Union.
We receive support from the European Union to strengthen our capabilities and mitigate risks. Our interest lies not only in ensuring the internal security of citizens and their property, but also in preventing the movement of weapons to other regions of Europe. Accordingly, we are focused on this issue, understand the risks and are trying to incorporate them into a counter-smuggling program,” said Diaconu.
It should be recalled that in November 2025, a lorry carrying contraband weapons was discovered at the Albita customs post. A criminal case was opened, and later the head of the Customs Service, Radu Vrabie, admitted that similar crimes may have been taking place since as early as 2023.
