President Maia Sandu warned about the risks associated with the fuel crisis and said that the authorities should be prepared for negative scenarios. The statements were made after a meeting of the National Security Council. The head of state emphasized that the country remains vulnerable to energy shocks due to a lack of its own resources, according to realitatea.md. “All the energy shocks, despite the measures taken, as well as the fact that we don’t have any oil or natural gas, are obviously affecting both households and the economy as a whole. We will monitor the situation and hope that the crisis will end as soon as possible, but we must be prepared for the worst-case scenarios. We don't have a formula or a pricing mechanism that would allow for a smoother transition to market prices, which takes 14 days and helps to avoid excessive volatility. However, this does not mean that prices will not eventually reach global levels,” Sandu said. At the same time, the President recalled the support measures that have already been taken and announced that the government is considering additional steps to support the economy. “I know that a program for refunding excise taxes for agriculture in the amount of more than 100 million lei has been approved. In the coming days, the government should analyze what other measures can be taken to support the economy. In the medium and long term, the solution remains the same: increasing energy independence through the development of renewable energy sources, reducing consumption through energy efficiency and electrification projects,” the President said. She also emphasized that the situation remains serious and could become critical if prices do not stabilize in the coming weeks. “This is an alarming situation, and I’m being straightforward: it will become very alarming if prices do not stabilize in the coming weeks,” Sandu concluded.
