The US has deployed AH-64E Apache attack helicopters to Mihail Kogalniceanu Air Base in Romania to bolster NATO’s presence in the Black Sea region. Kogalniceanu Air Base has become a key hub for US and NATO operations, including troop movements, air missions and multinational coordination, reports observator.ro. The AH-64E is capable of detecting, tracking and engaging a wide range of targets alongside allied ground forces. In Romania, the helicopters can protect movement routes, support exercises and provide fire support and reconnaissance. These helicopters do not perform air policing duties, remaining in a support role and providing protection against low-flying threats and drones. During the Skyfall exercises in Germany, the Apaches demonstrated their effectiveness against drones and small targets. “The presence of the helicopters reaffirms the US commitment to defending NATO’s south-eastern flank. Romania gains enhanced deterrence and strengthened cooperation with US forces. NATO gains an additional layer of robust defense for its eastern flank. The deployment of the AH-64E also demonstrates the platform’s adaptation to new threats in Europe. These measures strengthen NATO’s defense capabilities in the Black Sea region and enhance readiness for potential conflict situations,” the authors of the article write.
