Home / Security / Sandu on How Moldova Is Defending Itself Against Drones: Learning from the Best – the Ukrainians
Investment in security is becoming critically important against the backdrop of drones flying over and crashing in Moldova, said Maia Sandu, emphasizing that protecting citizens is a priority, as “if a drone falls on you, nothing else matters”.
Maia Sandu criticized those who treat the more than 50 cases of illegal airspace violations and approximately 10 incidents in which Russian drones crashed on the territory of the Republic of Moldova with contempt or irony, reminding them that such objects pose a serious danger, reports Radio Moldova.
Moldova is seeking to acquire technology capable of intercepting and destroying such aircraft before they cause tragedies or destruction, the president noted, acknowledging that the authorities do not yet have the necessary capabilities.
To adapt to the new reality, Moldova is cooperating with external partners, drawing on the experience of Ukraine – a country on the front line of the war and possessing valuable expertise, which it shares with other states equipped with modern defense systems.
Speaking about the sources of funding for the procurement of security equipment, the President clarified that a significant proportion of the existing systems had been acquired with the financial support of external partners in the form of donations, for which Moldova is grateful. However, she emphasized that the state must also invest its own funds to ensure the protection of the population.
