The aim of the reform is to strengthen the ministry’s capacity to implement EU legislation and manage the new areas transferred to its remit, including tourism and technological innovation. The additional annual expenditure for these changes is estimated at approximately 10.4 million lei. These provisions are contained in a draft government resolution aimed at reorganizing the institution and adapting its structure to its new responsibilities. The draft is on the agenda for the Cabinet meeting on 20 May, reports logos-press.md. The draft provides for an internal reorganization of the ministry, including the creation of new departments. These include a department dedicated to tourism development and a new directorate for policy in the field of the digital economy, artificial intelligence and technological innovation. At the same time, the number of state secretaries will increase from four to five, and several existing departments will be expanded through an increase in staff and management positions. In the context of transferring the tourism sector to the remit of the Ministry of Economic Development and Digitalization, it will also become the founder of the public institution “National Tourism Office”. Until now, this function has been performed by the Ministry of Culture. The draft’s authors explain that the tasks of implementing EU laws in the Ministry of Economic Development’s areas of responsibility must be largely completed by 2026. Given the substantial volume of European regulations, the tight deadlines and the current staffing limits, the ministry urgently needs to expand its structure.
