European Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos stated that Moldova’s place is in the European Union but the way in which the country becomes part of the EU depends exclusively on the will of its citizens. “There are several clear things. Moldova has demonstrated a strong desire to join the European Union. Going through this complex process is not easy, but Moldova has chosen this path. Second: there is a place for the Republic of Moldova inside the European Union, and there is no doubt about that. And the way in which this happens will be decided by the citizens of the Republic of Moldova,” the European Commissioner said in an interview with TVR Moldova. Earlier, in an interview with the French newspaper Le Monde published in April, President Maia Sandu stated that EU accession is a “strategy for the survival of a democratic state” under pressure from Russia. At the same time, she noted that unification with Romania could be one of the options for faster integration into the EU. Following this, Romanian President Nicusor Dan stated that Romania is ready for such a scenario at any time, if the citizens of Moldova wish it and if a majority supports such a project. For her part, Romanian Foreign Minister Oana Toiu emphasized that Bucharest’s position on unification remains unchanged and is consistent with the 2018 decision of the Romanian Parliament. She added that the current priority is advancing Moldova’s European integration.
