Grosu on the Incident in Copanca: Defense Investment Can No Longer Be Put on Hold

Following the incident involving a drone that crashed in the village of Copanca, Igor Grosu stated that Moldova must invest in defense and align its foreign policy with that of the EU, including on the issue of sanctions against Russia. The Speaker of Parliament said that such incidents are a direct consequence of the war in the neighboring country, according to stiri.md. “A real war is raging right on our doorstep, with all its horrors. This is probably one of the most terrifying wars, because we can see how far technology has advanced and how the nature of war has changed. Unfortunately, such incidents keep happening,” said Igor Grosu. According to him, responsibility for such incidents lies with the Russian Federation. “The source of these incidents is the Russian Federation, whose leader has decided that he can restore an empire. For the sake of this delusional idea, atrocities are committed every day: children and elderly people are dying, and civilian infrastructure is being destroyed,” said the Speaker of Parliament. Speaking about the drone discovered near Copanca, Grosu emphasized that it posed a real danger, as it was loaded with explosives. “It was a drone carrying explosives. By a stroke of luck, it did not explode on impact. It is fortunate that our bomb disposal experts intervened in time. They are true professionals, they extracted the explosive charge, defused it and destroyed it under safe conditions,” he noted. In the same vein, Grosu criticized those who mock such incidents, emphasizing that matters of national security must be treated with the utmost seriousness. “To those who laugh at such incidents, I hope they never find themselves in a situation where a drone launched by a deranged individual causes serious damage. So far, God has protected us, but we must invest in our defense system and airspace monitoring,” the Speaker stated. He also stated that diplomatic measures, including summoning the Russian Federation’s ambassador to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, must be taken following every such incident. “No single measure is sufficient on its own. The Russian ambassador must be summoned every time, because the state must demonstrate its position. If we fail to respond, we will set a dangerous precedent regarding Russia’s actions, not only in relation to the Republic of Moldova,” said the Speaker of Parliament. Igor Grosu added that similar incidents have occurred in other European countries and form part of Russia’s tactics to test the reactions of states in the region. Furthermore, he emphasized that the Republic of Moldova must fulfil the commitments it has undertaken as part of the European integration process, including by joining sanctions against the Russian Federation. “One of our commitments on the path to European integration is to join the sanctions. If you want to become a member of the European Union and be part of this community, you must join the sanctions against the Russian Federation in order to weaken an economy that is currently fueling the war,” concluded Igor Grosu.
