Romanian MP to Head Moldova’s Economy Ministry After Receiving Moldovan Citizenship

Prime Minister of Moldova Vasile Tofan has announced changes to the composition of the government. Minister Eugen Osmochescu will move to the position of Minister of Agriculture, while Romanian MP Claudiu Nasui will head the Ministry of Economic Development and Digitalization. President Maia Sandu signed a decree granting him Moldovan citizenship on August 25. The head of government noted that Eugen Osmochescu has a strong understanding of how the government operates and its priorities. According to Tofan, Osmochescu’s background in economics and experience with international financial institutions will help attract additional resources for modernizing agriculture and accelerate necessary reforms. Speaking about Claudiu Nasui, the prime minister highlighted his economic background, experience in the private sector and politics, as well as his involvement in implementing reforms in Romania. Nasui studied economics at Paris Dauphine University and finance at Bocconi University. He worked in the financial sector, including at PwC and BCR, and holds the CFA international certification. In 2016, Nasui was first elected to the Romanian Parliament, and in 2020-2021 he served as Romania’s Minister of Economy. Among his priorities in the new position, Tofan identified reducing bureaucracy, addressing problems within state-owned companies, cutting government spending and removing obstacles for small and medium-sized businesses. “We want the Ministry of Economy to become one of the main drivers of state reform and economic growth,” the prime minister said. According to Tofan, the new appointments are intended to accelerate reforms, improve the efficiency of the public administration and create additional opportunities for economic growth, including in the agricultural sector.
