MP Alexandr Stoianoglo has announced his intention to run for the post of Bashkan of Gagauzia. He will participate in the election as an independent candidate.
Stoianoglo made the announcement during a briefing.
“First and foremost, I am addressing the residents of the autonomy. But I believe it is important to explain my decision to everyone who follows my work in Parliament and the relationship between Gagauzia and the central authorities. Why did I make this decision? Why not remain an MP? My parliamentary experience has given me the answer. I have served more than one term. I know well the possibilities of Parliament, its limitations, and the cost of decisions made at the national level. This experience has led me to an important conclusion: not every problem facing Gagauzia can be solved from Parliament. An MP can raise an issue, propose legislation and seek a solution at the national level, but the Bashkan has a different responsibility,” Stoianoglo explained.
At the same time, Stoianoglo said he does not intend to give up his parliamentary mandate. However, his parliamentary activities will be suspended during the election campaign in accordance with the law.
“I am not giving up my parliamentary mandate. During the election campaign, my parliamentary activities will be suspended in accordance with the procedure established by law. The mandate remains in place, but the exercise of parliamentary powers and participation in the election campaign must be clearly separated,” he said.
The election for Bashkan of Gagauzia will be held on November 15, 2026. Elections to the People’s Assembly of Gagauzia will also take place on the same day. The state will allocate more than 13.6 million lei for organizing and conducting the elections.
