The agreement will cover natural gas transportation, the possibility of increasing electricity supplies to Ukraine, and facilitating fuel transit through the Republic of Moldova. The authorities in Kyiv have announced that Ukraine and Moldova are working on a bilateral document that will establish priority areas for cooperation in the energy sector, bani.md reports. One of the key issues is the use of regional gas transportation infrastructure. The two countries are exploring ways to expand cooperation and secure additional supply routes at a time when energy security remains a major challenge for the region. Another area of cooperation is electricity trading. Ukrainian authorities are examining the possibility of additional electricity imports through regional energy infrastructure, including interconnections with the Republic of Moldova. For Chisinau, a potential increase in electricity trading could create commercial opportunities for energy companies and operators involved in energy transportation and trading. However, the actual volume of transactions will depend on electricity availability, interconnection capacity and market conditions. A separate part of the discussions concerns the transportation of petroleum products. Kyiv and Chisinau intend to accelerate fuel transit through the Republic of Moldova, including by reducing tanker truck waiting times at state border crossing points. This issue is important for Ukraine, which, amid the war and logistical disruptions, depends on alternative routes for petroleum product supplies. The Republic of Moldova serves as one of the transit routes for goods transported from Romania and other European markets. Simplifying transportation could also benefit Moldova’s logistics sector by increasing transit volumes and making greater use of transport infrastructure. At the same time, more efficient border procedures could reduce costs and delays for carriers. The discussions between the two governments are taking place against the backdrop of intensified regional energy cooperation and efforts to diversify supply sources. The Republic of Moldova and Ukraine are connected to European energy systems and are seeking to make use of existing infrastructure to strengthen their energy security.
