The Polish oil and gas company PGNiG has signed a deal with the American company Cheniere Marketing International to secure liquefied natural gas from the United States for 24 years. During this time,Poland will receive more than 30 million tonnes of LNG. U.S. energy secretary Rick Perry called this deal “a great day for Europe”. According to him, this deal will assure freedom and the diversity of energy supply to Europe. Polish President Andrzej Duda called this deal a step towards energy security for Poland, as well as for the other countries of Central and Eastern Europe. The exact price is a commercial secret, but Maciej Wozniak, the vice-president of a Polish company, said that the cost of American gas would be almost a third lower than the cost of fuel from Russia. The seller took over all costs and risks associated with the delivery of goods to the port of destination. Earlier in Warsaw, they repeatedly expressed concern about the lack of alternative supply of Russian energy and expressed dissatisfaction with the terms of the contract with Gazprom, which expires in 2022. The Poles announced their intention to reimburse Russian supplies at the expense of the Norwegian shelf and LNG. Last November, PGNiG signed a five-year contract for LNG supplies from the British company Centrica. The current U.S. administration and a number of congressmen have repeatedly criticized European countries, primarily Germany, for their excessive, in their opinion, dependence on Russian gas supplies. The United States and a number of countries, including Poland, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, and Ukraine, view Moscow’s gas projects as an instrument of political pressure on Europe. Recently, the German authorities decided to support the construction of the LNG terminal in the country. Source: svoboda.org
