Starting January, the 1st of 2019, Romania has taken over the Presidency of the Council of the European Union, replacing Austria. The Romanian presidency will last until June 30. The official ceremony of the Romanian Presidency of in the EU Council will take place on January 10 at the Romanian Athenaeum in the center of Bucharest, the presidency website reports. On 11th of January, there will be joint press conference made by the President of Romania, Klaus-Werner Johannis, the President of the European Commission, Jean-Claude Juncker, and the Prime Minister of Romania, Viorica Dăncilă. On Twitter, the Romanian presidency published a message in which Romania promised “to work for a stronger, more united, more cohesive and democratic Europe”. The Romanian Chairmanship will be held under the motto “Cohesion as a common European value”. “It is very important that we move from “A Europe that protects” – the motto of the Austrian presidency – to Europe, where cohesion is a common value. We also need protection, but we also need a higher level of cohesion, rapprochement in the development of regions or eastern and western, southern and northern countries, old and new EU member states”, said Prime Minister Viorica Dăncilă on the symbolic ceremony of the beginning of the presidency.
