Ukraine’s national gas company Naftogaz filed a new $12bn claim against Russian state-owned gas monopoly Gazprom in international courts for potentially impairing gas deliveries, Naftogaz CEO Andrei Kobolev said on January 9 in an interview with Ukraine’s Channel 5. According to the top manager, Gazprom, after the construction of the Nord Stream 2 and Turkish Stream gas pipelines, will cease to “fulfill its obligations to Naftogaz as the owner of the contract”. Kobolev said that the claim was sent to the Stockholm Arbitration. The head of Naftogaz said that his company would be ready to abandon the suit if a new long-term contract was signed with Gazprom according to European standards. “In fact, we are talking to our Russian colleagues: if you build (bypass gas pipelines — Red.) And you do not want to transport, then compensate. If you want to transport and are ready to sign a long-term contract according to European rules, with guarantees that you will pay this money to us, we are ready to refuse the claim or change it”, explained Andrei Kobolev.
