Russian Energy Minister Alexander Novak announced the construction of more than half of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline. During a telephone conversation with Federal Minister for Economic Affairs and Energy of Germany Peter Altmaier he also said that the project is being implemented in accordance with the schedule. “In total, around 700 km of the gas pipeline have been laid along both lines, this is over half”, Novak said on Monday, February, 18. The ministers also discussed the latest amendments to the EU Gas Directive and the results of the trilateral Russia-EU-Ukraine meeting on January 21. The revised version of the directive should extend to the offshore pipelines entering the territory of the European Union countries, the norms of the Third Energy Package. According to the amendments, the gas producing company cannot be the owner of such infrastructure, and 50% of the pipeline’s capacity should be reserved for pumping fuel from independent suppliers.   Also according to the amendments initiated by Berlin and Paris, Germany, the first to be connected to the pipeline, takes responsibility for negotiations by third countries on the implementation of the gas project.
