The European Union is ready to agree with the postponement of Britain’s withdrawal from its membership, but under certain conditions, said Chief Brexit Negotiator Michel Barnier. The European Union is ready to make concessions to Britain on the issue of its withdrawal from the EU (Brexit), Chief Brexit Negotiator Michel Barnier said in an interview with Germany’s Die Welt newspaper, published on Saturday, March 2. According to him, the EU states can agree to postpone Brexit, but only if certain conditions are met. In particular, the purpose of this postpone should be clear. “Any extension of the deadline means the extension of the uncertainty of citizens and businesses on both sides”, warned Barnier.  “Backstop” is only a temporary measure Moreover the head of the EU delegation told about misgivings in London because of the “backstop”. The EU insisted on this mechanism to avoid the resumption of customs and border controls between EU member Ireland and British-ruled Northern Ireland. “We know that there are misgivings in Britain that the backstop could keep Britain forever connected to the EU”, said Barnier, stressing that “this is not the case” and the EU is ready to give further “guarantees, assurances and clarifications” that the backstop should only be temporary.   Source: DW
