Maia Sandu categorically opposes the position of President Igor Dodon in resolving the Transnistrian conflict, which he expressed in his speech to the UN.
The prime minister said this on RTR Moldova, commenting on the speech of the head of state at a session of the UN General Assembly, reports news.md
“Unfortunately, in this speech Mr. Dodon also touched on the problem of the so-called “big package” as a solution to the Transnistrian conflict. We are categorically against this. Because what Mr. Dodon offers through this ‘Big Package’is that he offers big players like the USA, EU and Russia to decide this issue for us, bypassing Moldovan citizens so that they [behind the back of Moldova] agree on the future of our country,” Sandu explained.
Moreover, as it follows from her words, the “big package” format will harm the European future of Moldova. “We do not agree and will never agree that for this solution to the conflict we would pay in our goal - to become members of the European Union some day,” – the Prime Minister emphasized.
As reported by eNews, on September 26 this year President of the Republic of Moldova Igor Dodon addressed the session of the 74th General Assembly of the United Nations. In his speech, Dodon noted, among other things, the progress made in recent years in efforts to bring the banks of the Dniester closer, implemented in the framework of various projects of a humanitarian, economic and social nature. Dodon says that “this gives to the diplomacy of major powers a good chance to make a decisive contribution to resolving the frozen conflict and to set a positive precedent for solving dozens of such situations around the world”.
Further, Igor Dodon said that ‘the political formula for a peaceful solution to the Transnistrian problem should be jointly developed and agreed upon by the main political entities of the Republic of Moldova - the president, parliament, government and other state institutions. Then this formula should be proposed for discussion to our external partners and the 5+2 negotiation format.
A few hours after Dodon’s speech at the UN, the Action and Solidarity Party (PAS) expressed its disagreement with the president’s position, calling it ‘illogical and inconsistent’.
A few days earlier, the head of PAS, Prime Minister Maia Sandu said that coalition partners would distance themselves from the head of state “if President Igor Dodon makes statements that do not reflect the position of the government and especially the position of the ACUM bloc.”
