Gazprom expects to launch the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline at the end of 2020, states the presentation of the oil company dedicated for the company's investor day. “Launching: the end of 2020”, RIA Novosti quotes. On January 31, the German ambassador to Russia announced that work on Nord Stream 2 and its launching should take place no later than the first quarter of 2021. It was reported on January 28 that the Russian side is to complete the implementation of the Nord Stream-2 gas pipeline on its own. In December 2019, the key subcontractor of Nord Stream 2, the Swiss-Dutch company Allseas suspended pipe laying for gas pipeline under the Baltic Sea due to the sanctions imposed by Washington as prescribed the US defense budget. The document was adopted in December; it provides for restrictive measures against companies building Nord Stream 2. Russia informed of its intention to independently complete the gas pipeline and put it into operation in 2020. The Russian Foreign Ministry called the US sanctions a gesture of despair and an example of "unfair economic competition" when trying to block the project that is beneficial to Russia and Europe. It was noted that out of 2.46 thousand km of gas pipeline the amount of 2.3 thousand were laid along the bottom of the Baltic Sea. Europe considered unacceptable restriction on the project.
