Volodymyr Zelensky believes he will be able to return all the temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine, including Crimea.
President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky said he does not hold on to power and is ready to step down as head of state if the war in Donbass cannot be ended. He said this in an interview with the BBC HARDtalk, released on October 11.
"If I cannot end the war, then another person who is able to end this tragic story between our countries must come," Zelensky said and stressed that "he does not cling to either ratings or the power."
Asked if he believes he can conclude a peace agreement with Russian President Vladimir Putin that could return all temporarily occupied territories, including Crimea, Zelensky said: “I do believe in. Otherwise, I would not go for Ukraine presidency. It is extremely difficult and we need the help of the whole world about, it's true. But I do not lose this faith. "
At the same time, Zelensky considers it difficult ending the war in Donbas while unblocking the Normandy process would be a great progress.
"This is a very difficult issue. Yes, I want to do it faster. Because I understand that as another day goes by we lose our people. But still, we have unblocked the Normandy process. This is a dialogue. French President Emmanuel Macron does really support Ukraine. Madam Merkel as well. We got the President of the Russian Federation back, "Zelensky said.
He recalled that in a year Ukraine managed to return 140 citizens who were held in Russian prisons and in the occupied territories. The ceasefire is also observed in Donbas.
"We really do not react to single shelling. We must not do so that the conflict escalates. But there are combat losses and this is the main result. In 75 days of combat losses, one person died," Zelensky added.
Earlier, Zelensky stated
the need of a dialogue with Putin. According to him, direct negotiations with the Russian president are necessary to resolve issues important for Ukraine, issues that cannot be resolved within the Normandy format.
